Recap of The Comicky Ziney Dinner night

Hey!

Guess what!?! I am tired and sleepy and writing another blog post. Damn I’m dedicated to my adoring public..and the less adoring of you.

So last night was the follow-up event associated with the liedekijn exhibition – an afternoon of comic/art talks at the ACT writers centre and what turned out to be more turkish food and drinks then a room full of comic loving people can consume.

It was certainly an eventful time with action scenes when the mini beer keg decided to rupture and spray beer everywhere. If it wasn’t for Ben’s timely impression of a 60’s Batman running with a bomb held aloft out of the room we would had to have been trying to soak the stuff out of carpet instead of just the walls. Personally I blame the Joker… his schemes just don’t seem to have the luster that they once did. However he did bring smiles to people’s faces so I guess that’s good.

We had talks by:

Katie Winchester: Former Canberran and animator extraordinaire for Mythbusters (yes THAT Mythbusters). Who showed as a demo reel of her work and talked on the highs and lows of being a freelance artist.

Tim McEwen: Who gave an awesome speech on … well pretty much how to be a cool artist. As I understand much of it involves looking like James Dean, learning how to be an escape artist and being a Jazz musician in your spare time. I really enjoyed seeing the art process work, inking and thoughts on drawing hands.

Bruce Mutard: Bruce gave us a detailed account of the history of wars and how working on a story for 2 years to find your publisher feels the story meets expectations can drive you into a spiral of new creative story ideas. Also awesome to see progress drawings.

I found it interesting that all artists seemed to want to brush past showing the process of their art as soon as possible when I find that the most interesting part.

Thanks for the all the people attending. I hope you had a good time. Thanks for being patient with technology holdups. A special thanks to Ben for being the bartender and to Matt for endeavoring to help crack the technology issues. And lastly a special thanks to Emma for once again conceiving, organising and pushing this idea into reality.

Unfortunately I did not manage to get many pics of the night as I was super busy but here’s what I got 🙂

Yep, I agree with you about not talking enough about technique. I love watching people draw, seeing what pens they use, how they work digitally etc. In fact, if someone made an hour long film showing people drawing, I’d be mesmerised!

Yeah seeing how people create is the best – I also suspect non artists find it interesting as well. I think artists tend to gloss over the process making in talks as to them its exposing ‘mistakes’.
