After days, weeks and many many hours of work the night had come. The culmination of the efforts of 38 contributors had been complied, scrutinised, assembled, printed, numbered and a selection had even been sketched in. A total of 64 people said they would turn up on our Facebook event… but would they? It is Facebook after all….
But, apparently…. Yes! We had one or 2 people wander in and poke at the book inquisitively and then suddenly we had a packed room. While we had no official method of recording the number of people that attended I think we had at least all the Facebook invites and their friends as well as people who had seen the posters and randoms. Randoms are good.
Selling comics is a nervous thing for me to do but I sat myself behind the table piled with comics and tried not to look so creepy that I would scare away any potential sales. Apparently the lure of our shiny comic was far too enticing to not to miss out on, cause I spent all night hurriedly writing down sales and scrambling for change. Personally I was especially proud when people asked how much the book was, then realised they did not have enough money and instead of walking away ran out to get money in time.
While I quickly found I did not have time to sketch in peoples books we had some of our awesome artists scribbling away dutifully; namely Katie Ryan, Darren Close , Mal Briggs, Emma-Jean Stewart, Sam Cavanagh and our awesome cover artist Jon Sommariva. (Possibly other people were sketching away but I did not see them.) Besides the book itself, we had posters and badges for sale – and one of the posters sold out with more preorders taken.
The energy on the night was wonderful, people were excited at being there and enjoying flicking though the book and chatting to other excited people. Katie stepped up halfway though the event and gave a speech to the crowd nicely summing up all the work that had gone into the Anthology; the great thanks we all felt for everyone who supported our crazy endeavour; and beyond all, our love of making comics.
By the nights end we had sold more books then any of us had taken bets on and people seemed more than happy with the book. It was a great night and I think went better then any of us was expecting.
And now for all you people that was unable to reach the Canberra for the night the lovely book is available online HERE! You can get Artists Editions as well! And posters and other merch will be uploaded soon!!
At this stage will be attending the Melbourne Supanova event so come say hi (and buy our comic).
I shall leave you with some pictures of the night from my vantage point behind the book selling table. Many thanks to all that have come.
